Anxiety and Young People
Anxiety is the most common form of mental disorder, affecting up to 20% of children, adolescents and teenagers. Anxiety significantly interferes with a young person's ability to confidently handle everyday situations, including relationships with peers, adults and family. It also affects achievement at school. If left unattended, anxiety difficulties may continue into adulthood, sometimes leading to social isolation, underachievement, and depression. FRIENDS for Life combats anxiety by fostering an emotional resilience that will stay with them for life. Originally developed in Australia and used in schools worldwide, FRIENDS for Life has now been adapted to the New Zealand culture and school curriculum and is the ONLY anxiety prevention programme of its kind acknowledged by the World Health organisation for its 15 years of comprehensive evaluation and practise. | |
The FRIENDS programme is designed to reach out to these young people who do not always attract the help they need. FRIENDS teaches emotional resilience that will stay with youth for life, and teaches practical, useful strategies for coping with stress.
